Rhum - Scottish island number 10
We left Muck in the morning and goosewinged North at four and a half knots.
As we got closer to Rhum we could see the cloud cover filling, and then a deep mist descended. Although we did get our sound signal out ( - . . ) visibility didn't get quite bad enough to use it.
In Rhum this afternoon upto 30 yachts are expected. They are doing the Malt Cruise, which is (or was) something to do visiting whisky distilleries.
We had hoped to visit Kinloch castle, but it is only open for the guided tour and we missed that by half an hour.
Scotland in summer is renowned for suffering with two particular problems: bad weather and midges. Our guide book warns that Rhum is a particulalry favoured spot for midges, and so it proved. In fact we haven't been bothered by midges at all till Rhum, and even there it wasn't too bad. I have some citronella ointment I bought in India which seems to help.
Rhum has a strong community spirit. We spent some time in the community centre which had refreshments and internet access. The local big house, Kinloch Castle, hosts a hostel and a bar in the evening. As there were 23 other yachts anchored in the small bay we were not surpsied to find a few yachties in the bar. We had a good natter!
