Friday 11pm

We left Aberystwyth mid afternoon, having to wait for enough tide to get over the bar.
We steamed West for an hour and then turned North and sailed a fine reach for a couple of hours. It was very nice in the sun. A pod of 4 dolphins, much larger than those we had seen previously, escorted us for a while.

The wind backed a bit, we had to head further starboard, the sun went in and it got colder. The last 3 hours or so was a broad reach and with 2 meter seas behind us it got a bit rock and rolly.

We arrived at Pwllheli 9ish and anchored off the beach in shelter from the SW sea, but its still pretty blowy just where we are. We hope to go ashore tomorrow, not least to watch 'the match' (though Viv may go and play bingo.)

Saturday 28

We tied up in Pwllheli marina. We called up marina control, who advised us of no problems in the channel, but as we came in we spotted a yacht, Impetuous,  listing seriously.  She wasn't moving and had, in fact, gone aground on a significant sandbank in the middle of the channel. Some yachties hailed us, advising we turn back immediately and take a different route up stream, which we did with considerable caution but no problem.

The silting up of the river here has caused a lot of bad feeling. As a result this marina, which had a wating list of 200 a few years ago, now has 50 vacant berths.

Pwllheli is worth half a day. Not a lot, but some interesting charity and secondand shops, a great old fashioned hardware store and a vinatge map shop in an old methodist church.

In the evening we took part in a quiz at the local yacht club. It was a nautical themed quiz and we won convincingly, gaining a bottle of bubly and a great device for identifying lights and visual signals at sea. We had nice chats with various people about our exploits.

Sunday 29

We will leave on the evening tide and anchor offshore ready to tackle Bardsey Sound at slack water tomorrow afternoon (inshallah). In the meantime we bide our time in this typical wet bank holliday wekend in Wales.
