Greetings from the Sea Breeze Hotel in Mamallapuram. This isn't the first time I've visited here and the last time was with Rich and Drew back in 2004? I'm sure if my dates are wrong Mr Evans will be sure to correct me.

Anyway,it's Saturday night and I'm making the most of free wifi at a tourist type bar. Since arriving I've seen more ferangis than I thought I would especially given it's not peak season yet.

The days riding started off fine and I was on the road by 0745. As expected the traffic approaching Chennai got progressively worse but I was glad of the fact that I'd kicked back for a day and it was now Saturday.

The big city driving experience was as I had unfortunately expected and things don't seem to have improved much since the last time I rode through this city.

There were plenty  of close shaves (not grommit types) and one in particular that'll stay with me for some time. As approaching Chennai - from the north, in heavy traffic, I saw a white 4x4 bearing down on me at great speed. I was in lane 2 (middle lane) of 3 and I was grateful for my remaining nearside blind spot mirror - that gave me the heads up of impending doom. The white 4x4 (they're usually driven by idiots) was straddling both lanes and it was clearly obvious to me that it was going to be a very close call. I couldn't pull over due to a car in lane 3 (fast lane) so had to wait and see what happened. Suffice to say he didn't slow down............................WHACK.................His wraparound bull bar hit my handlebar sending me violently to my offside. Fortunately the car to my right swerved and unbelievably we didn't collide although our exchange of looks said it all.  The white 4x4 had slowed considerably (he might have had a conscience) but I'm  sorry to say my teddy and pram had parted company somewhat. I think the driver knew I was slightly perturbed but chose to point and laugh much to the amusement of his three male passengers. The phrase 'red rag to a bull' springs to mind and I followed the vehicle until it came to a halt in the busy city traffic.

I 'politely' tapped on the side of the car before engaging the driver in conversation and hopefully imparting some of my 'advanced' driving skills to benefit him in later life. This idiot (for want of a better description) had clearly borrowed his daddy's car for the day and was showing off to his friends. I'm not sure how his explanation will go (due to the visual consequences of his actions) but think I'm now looking at 7 years mirror related bad luck. Hey ho!  I know it's not big nor clever but I do get slightly annoyed when people try to kill me.

This is the first incident- of what  I consider to be - intentional bad driving. What was it I said previously about bad indian driving standards?

I then kicked through Chennai to the coast then headed south on the scenic route. Not as scenic as one might hope but it was ok.

On arrival at the hotel -I remembered this area from 8/9 years ago - I checked in and started trying to fix the mighty impulse's electrical problems.

It was then time for a beer and a Saturday night fish supper.

Ok, I'll try and upload a photo or two then it's party time!

Ye ha- it's Saturday night and I'm at the seaside     ;-)

Photo uploading failed - sorry - I'll try tomorrow whilst reading the papers, drinking coffee and nursing my hangover   ;-)

Oops, when I wished you “dramas” this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. But, I am right, it is better reading. Perhaps it was to rebalance after the comfy duvet earlier in the week. Funny, after the Hyatt, you had the drama with Richard’s bike and the road to Darjeeling -- Curious.

Going forward, maybe something in between duvet snuggling and crashing?

Wise words indeed - in future I'll aim for mid range accommodation (no duvets) and see how my luck goes. Do I also need to avoid places with swimming pools? If so, ooops!
