If you REALLY wanna know what these things were like, ask and we can tell you
The things that we thought were totally awesome we're gunna talk about in more detail, and the stuff above, we'll just tell you we went there. OK, so.....
Flo: After getting into New York late after a 13 hour train journey from Canada, we checked straight into a Hostel. The next morning we meet up with Dan (Simon's brother) and Kate (Dan's girlfriend) in Grand Central, well Simon snuck up on them! It was nice to see people we knew. We checked straight into our hotel, our room as pretty huge - loads of space for me to unpack my backpack which was good :) We walked 10mins down the road and we arrived in Time Square!!! After lunch and a bit of wandering we went up the Empire State, which was cool.
The next day was the day to shop!! Well one of them! We went to Macy's for hours! - Dan brought the most! Me and Simon didnt get anything due to lack of space :( Dan did buy Simon a couple of t-shirts though.
Simon: That day wasn't just shopping day, it was September 11th. It was so weird to be in NY for it, and everyone was obviously talking about it. Before our shopping trip we went down to Ground Zero in the pouring rain and listened to the bells at the time the planes hit the towers and when the towers fell, and then the victims names being read out. People just stopped all around and listened, and there was hundreds of cops and fire fighters all around. It was really sombre and it was pretty cool to be there for it.
We went to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant, and it was completely awesome! Our waiter was super friendly, and asked us loads of questions about Forrest Gump! And they had this cool sign that you flipped over when you wanted something that said Stop Forrest Stop, and Run Forrest Run when you didn't need anything! I had the extremely appetisingly named "Bucket of Boat Trash", but it was SO good!
After dinner we went to Ground Zero again to see the two giant lights where the towers used to be. When we got down there the firehouse across the street from GZ was open and had a memorial inside and a wall of memorials outside, and the engine was outside on display. 5 of the guys who died in the attacks worked there and the other Firefighters were telling stories to tourists and stuff, it was really sad, but it was great to be there and see it all.
Day 3 and we headed downtown to the Financial District & Wall Street, as well as walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. The Bridge is like 100 years old, and the walking deck is just these thin planks with gaps in between, and then the RIVER BELOW! It felt so unstable, but it was obviously fine because so many people were walking over it! The views were great even though the weather was a bit miserable, and we didn't go all the way over the bridge, just halfway, but it's a must-do if you go to NY.
We spent the afternoon in Midtown around the Rockefeller centre (we didn't go up it yet) where we bought AMAZING cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery (apparently it's from Sex and The City), and Trump Tower, where we had ice cream and coffee and read newspapers
Flo: The cupcakes were so yummy! The most delicious cupcakes in the whole wide world! Next day we went downtown to go on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. We got the tickets to go in the pedestal and museum underneath the statues' feet. The lift was broken though, so we had to climb up all the steps! it wasn't that many though, and the views of Manhattan were superb :) After we'd got off the boat we had to rush back uptown to the hotel because Simon & Dan were going to the football game (more about that below) and Me and Kate went off to do some more shopping!! :) We saw the Naked Cowboy in Time Square, he was surrounded by women, we managed to get a photo of him. There was also another not so famous semi naked Cowgirl, well more like Cowgranny!!! LOL! (see the photo!) Kate brought a few things and I did some window shopping, we headed back to the hotel some for peace without the boys! Then they returned......
Simon: IT'S FOOTBALL TIME!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Ok, so Sunday was NFL Kickoff Weekend, and after 8 long months football was back, and we went to see the Giants vs Redskins at Giants Stadium, which is a massive rivalry. It was buzzing and the stadium was completely sold out, so lucky we'd already bought tickets! The entire stadium was Giants Blue save for a few (very brave) Redskins fans who got absolutely abused! It was SO much better than the UK NFL games i've been to because everyone at the stadium here knew what was going on, knew about the game and it had a much better atmosphere.
The game was a classic too, some awesome plays, great hits, great catches, some real edge-of-your-seat stuff
If you can get to a game, especially a Rivalry like Giants vs Redskins, Giants vs Cowboys or Giants vs Eagles, do it!! it might cost like $100 each, but it was worth every penny.
Monday was Dan & Kate's last full day, so we did lots more shopping in the afternoon with them, mostly for souvenirs (Dan & Kate bought stuff, we didn't really).
In the morning though we started the day with an AWESOME breakfast at a Diner, and we all had an ENORMOUS stack of pancakes each (i won't mention how much it was!). Halfway thru the meal, Naomi Watts (from King Kong/ The Ring) sat down next to us!! Crazy! After that we went to Central Park to the Zoo! Unlike what Madagascar tells you, there is no Lions, Giraffes, Hippos or Zebras, but there was Polar Bears, Penguins, Baby Monkeys, Red Pandas and AWESOME Sealions! We watched the penguins being fed, and the Sealion show, which was so cool! They dove from the rocks, balanced balls on their nose, jumped out of the water like dolphins, ate loads of fish, clapped, barked and were just generally brilliant
Later on that day we saw some filming on Fifth Avenue, and 2 seconds later Dr Phil walked right in front of me to go film! 2 celebs!
The last day we went to the Top of The Rock at the Rockefeller Center. The views here are SO much better than the Empire State, there is 8 foot glass walls on 2 of the outside decks, and the top floor there is nothing blocking the view, and the fence is only 4 feet high, meaning amazing 360 views of Manhattan.
Dan had a surprise in store also, because he proposed on top of The Rock!! I don't think she could quite believe it! The pictures attached are just after he did it, and you can see how happy she is!! Congrats!
The rest of the day we walked around the remainder of Central Park, where we saw Ricky Gervais hurrying through with his girlfriend! Then Dan & Kate left for their flight at around 5:30.
The last day we spent in New York we really didn't have much left to do!! I had started getting a cold and felt terrible, so we just visited a few more places, like the Flatiron Building and Times Square (for like the 10th time!) before getting an early night before our early train journey.
Flo: It was really nice to see people we knew, and New York was just as good as we both remembered it (because we've both been before separately in 2005) and the things that we hadn't done before (Like the Rockefeller Center and Central Park Zoo) were even better. It was good being there on September 11th, but a little sad, and we really had a superb time.
Next up, Boston!
Until then, Bye!
