After dragging ourselves and our gear off-site in the burning midday sun and short-cutting the taxi queue by joining up with a couple of nice Irish guys and blagging a passing cab, it was time to jump in the trusty Saab and head down to Zagreb. Despite the lack of sleep we made it, inspite of the terrible Hungarian roads - the nice new motorway runs out halfway to Croatia and deposits you onto route 7, a narrow two way road with foot-deep ruts in the tarmac from the heavy traffic between the countries. Bouncing along this at 40 or so worrying whether the suspension will survive was livened up by impatient Hungarian drivers carrying out insanely suicidal blind-corner overtaking manoveurers - 80mph into oncoming traffic before swerving back into traffic inches from oncoming trucks. Amazingly we didn't see anyone die, and arrived safely at the border and a lovely smooth new croatian motorway through beautiful mountain scenery dotted with cute little white houses with red tiled roofs. Zagreb seems small and peaceful after Budapest, and we pulled up still stinky and filthy at the amazingly swanky Regent Esplanade hotel (built in the 1920's as a stop-off for the Orient Express), much to the amusement of the immaculately uniformed and charming staff who gave us fizzy wine and checked us in as if we were as smart as their usual clientele. So nice to relax in opulent luxury after a week of roughing it...
