Sleeping rough in Sierra de Grazalema

Daisy had her biggest climb yet today as we left Ronda and headed further into the hills to a nearby national park called the Sierra de Grazalema. We sat at the bottom of the pass looking up at the winding road zig-zagging up the mountain side with its hairpin bends wondering whether Daisy could make the 1,375m climb - and being irresponsible we decided we'd try it and see! And of course it was no problem, although if we'd had to stop for any reason it would have been one hell of a hill start! We wanted to do a couple of walks in the reserve area of the national park and had to drive to a village called El Bosque to get a special permit allowing us to enter as only 30 people a day are allowed to walk the paths. The best was the 'Garganta Verde' which takes you down into the bottom of a huge 400m gorge, very spectacular but a bit creepy in the bottom - not another person in sight and an eerie silence only broken by the squawk of the dozens of vultures overhead! This is a beautiful area, the mountains, reservoir and lovely old towns such as Grazalema and Zahara make it very scenic. We wild camped part way up the pass for three nights watching the sun set behind the mountains - wishing we had electric so we could plug the heater in and watch dvd's on our laptop!
