Epilog
Initially I had planned to spend the year's end in Cartagena, to take it easy and to enjoy the relaxing Caribbean atmosphere in a pleasant environment. However, after receiving messages of "masses of people will be there" and "all the nice apartments are booked out, or are too expensive" I decided to spend New Year's Eve and the first day of the new year in Machu Picchu, after all, it is an awesome and inspiring place that I had wanted to visit for the longest of times. And so I wrapped a trip to northern South America around that event, and except for Cartagena it was terra incognita for me.
This trip was put together within a very short period of time, and the plan called for a two months journey to start in Lima, then Cuzco and Machu Picchu, a flight to La Paz and back to Lima. From there to Quito and an excursion to the Galapagos Islands, returning to the Ecuadorian capital and continue via Bogota to Cartagena, with additional time left to visit other locations.
Although I had researched all the flying options, only the leg to Lima, and the return leg from San Salvador were booked to make scheduling while traveling as flexible as possible. As it turned out, it was a good idea; using San Salvador as the point of return was not, Panama City would have been the better choice - it just has better and more connections from Cartagena and many Caribbean cities.
The given flexibility allowed me to change the original travel route several times, influenced by bad weather, health concerns, and good and bad travel advice while on the road.
In order to make it easy on the typing of this report none of the Spanish words will have any accents (for instance ó or ñ), because we are not in a Spanish class, and as it will not change the character of its content.
While I might mention some hotels or restaurants in locations that I visited, I will not list them all (because this is not your regular travel guide).
To make it easier for future travelers I will list some of the more memorable places at the end of each report in order to make the reading easier.
And please note that all information provided is subject to change: places might close; prices might go up (or down), depending on the season or demand. And the figures for elevations might vary as well; they are all mas o menos.
Now, lean back and enjoy the trip...
