Sat 11th Feb......
Having spent the day wine-tasting - not drinking it, contrary to popular belief - we drove on to Nelson through the Wairau Valley on to Havelock - the Greenlip Mussel capital of the world - there is a great restaurant in Havelock called "Mussleboys" - there are over 200 mussel farms in this area. We drove on past Picton via the Queen Charlotte Scenic route to Nelson - it is part of the beautiful Nelson Lakes National Park and is just a stunning. We arrived in Nelson at about 5 pm and stayed at Almond House which was passable - would not use it again if in this area. Nelson is a situated by the sea and is a pleasant place - Christchurch neo-Gothic Cathedral being the focal point - the beaches are marvellous and quiet - we had a long walk through the park to the bay - Tasman Bay - found an excellent place on the water to have dinner called Olivios - we had a seafood platter which was really tasty - just as if it had just been caught. Nelson claims to be the sunniest place in NZ and it was justified - the sun was still shining at 8 pm! We walked back through the park to retire for the night as we had an exciting day planned for tomorrow.....
