12th March..

I took the bus from Niah to Miri - about 1.5 hours - quite comfortable - we passed loads of Palm Oil plantations on the way.  When I arrived in Miri bus station (ALL the bus stations are outside of the town by some KM's) I got a taxi to my Guest House and settled in.  Had a cup of Borneo coffee which is excellent.  I then had a wander around the immediate area and had lunch.  The town is quite large and thriving - Miri is another city that has off-shore drilling wells (the other one being Bintulu) so there is a big presence of Petronas Oil and Shell - noticeably the expensive cars and huge flash houses in the neighbourhood - also 5* hotels to cater for all the business clients.  It really is a working town as opposed to a tourist destination.  Most people use Miri as a jumping off point to other destinations - hence, the meaning of the Title of this entry!!

As my original itinerary was blown off course - due to the river closure - I am now going to Mulu National Park for 3 nights and to Brunei for 2 days - the advantage of travelling alone and not being on a package holiday - total flexibility!!  I have just booked my flight to Mulu and have sorted the trip to Brunei - all with the help of Mrs Lee (the owner here) and another guest, who has just come back from Mulu - having spent 7 days there.  She has given me all the low down of where to stay, what to see, which walks to do  etc etc - a real benefit.

13th March...  Last evening 5 Aussies, one Dutch guy and myself all went out for a few beers.  Three of the Aussies were heading back home last night so they had their farewell drinks - in fact one of the was celebrating his 30th birthday.  We had a really enjoyable evening and no I did NOT get drunk or let the side down!!

I have now repacked to go to the airport to set off for Mulu so you will not have any more input until I get back on 17th March.

Bye for now.
