I took the bus from Khao Lak at 8 am on Sunday morning - the journey took 3 hours in total to get to Kata Beach. I was the only white (even though I am developing a nice tan) person on the bus. I slept for some of the way - after a while the scenery is more of the same - lots of wooded areas. My first impression of Kata Beach was very positive and I still feel the same. When I arrived at my hotel I thought WOW!! It has lots of class and style - a bit on the lines of Hotel du Vin group. The owner, Phil, from London has done a great job with it. The afternoon I arrived he took 3 of us on a guided tour of the place - showing us the best places to eat, have massages, to see, sunset picture spots and view points. He also told us what places of interest are worth visiting. We also received from him, a fresh coconut - my first one ever - it was delicious to drink and then you scooped out the coconut on the inside of the shell and that too had a wonderful flavour - not a bit like the desiccated coconut I have eaten in the past
In the evening, I went down to the beach and took lots of pics of the sunset - to be uploaded later, along with pics of other places. I had a most enjoyable Thai dinner and retired to bed at about 10 pm. I slept like a log - the most comfortable bed so far on my travels.
This morning I had my hair cut, a manicure and a pedicure - it has made me feel so much less like a backpacker! I have booked an appointment for a full Medical check-up at the International Hospital - it is fantastic value and they have state-of-the-art equipment. I have heard great reports of the treatment in this hospital from an American and a Canadian who come here each year to avail of these services at a fraction of the cost they would have to pay in their own countries. I have to fast for 10 hours before this health check-up - watch this space for feedback.
That's it for now.
22nd Feb - Had my check-up today - all went well - I was there for 4 hours in total and had all sorts of tests done - at the end of it I received a printout of all the results available - the rest I will receive by 8th March by email
I spent the rest of my time in Phuket visiting the Big Buddha, Patong, walking the beaches and taking a bus ride around the island. It would not be a place I would rush to go back to - too many girlie bars and old men with girls young enough to be their grand-daughters!! Quite gross, and sad for the poor girls. Nearly every old man you see riding a motor bike, has a young Thai girl on the back - c'est la vie!
There was one bright positive side to the visit - the place where I had breakfast each morning, had the most delightful and wonderful young ladies - Ying and Ying - they were kindness itself. Firstly, the place was like a French patisserie - scrumptious croissants, pain au chocolat, pastries, breads, a fantastic bircher muesli with yogurt, fresh fruits and honey plus really good quality coffee - what more could you ask for? But, getting back to the staff, Ying No 1 took pics of me and me with them and presented me with a wallet of these pics and a beautiful orchid plant when I was leaving - I was quite overcome. Unfortunately, I could not take the orchid as it would not be allowed on the plane to Penang - but the thought was there. I was really sorry to say good-bye to them - that was the good side of Phuket.
On 25th I left Phuket and flew to Penang.
