Where I stayed
Walker's Inn, Khao Lak
Anyway - see what tomorrow brings.
The couple who run this place are really nice - Andy and Joo - very helpful and kind. Place completely full all the time I was there. After breakfast, I went for a walk in the National Park - I did about 5 miles as it got too hot so I decided to come back to the beach and go in the sea - the sea was like a hot bath so not very refreshing - but it was still good. I spent the rest of the day under a giant rubber tree out of the direct sunlight - 90 degrees is a bit more than I like and sunburn at this stage of my trip would not be a good idea. I found a few nice coffee shops in the town and I also had a few tasty Thai dinners - namely Pad Thai and Massaman (a type of curry with cashew nuts, chicken and potatoes - this was a new one for me and worth trying.
The following day I spent at the pool - read my book and just relaxed under a sun umbrella. The town of Khao Lak is mostly just one street with the side streets leading down to the beach resorts, of which there are many from 3 to 5* in quality
I have come to the conclusion that Thailand is the winter destination for northern Europeans, in particular Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany and some Russian parts - they come for up to 3 months at a time and seem to come in groups. Also, I noticed in the place where I stayed that there were no English paperbacks to swap - all German - and I have no command of that language and am now about to start learning it now!
My overall views of Khao Lak are: not enough to do there - would not come back - beach not inviting enough - would get bored there quickly - too far from Khao Sok (the best National Park in this part of Thailand) - about 100 km. I did have one interesting experience - one of the staff in my B&B took me on her motorbike to the market - it was really nice to see and I spent over an hour just wandering around and bought a few things.
