 5th Feb -

Koh Samui is Thailand's 3rd largest island and is surrounded by approx 80 smaller islands.

It was quite a long trip from Hua Hin to here - bus from Hua Hin to Champhon and then on to Surit Thani to catch the ferry to Na Thon (3 hours) - stopped at Koh Tao - Koh Phagan and then finally Ko Samui - at 5.30 pm, having left my B&B in Hua Hin at 7.30 am.  I went on an Express Catamaran - the sea was really rough - he ploughed through that sea like a bat out of hell!  There were many sick bags being used and as for any thoughts of getting up to get food or use the facilities - forget it, unless you wanted to end up black and blue!!  I tried to close my eyes and sleep so that I would not get sick and, fortunately,  it worked.

I got a taxi to my guest house and I just had a shower and crashed for the night!  I felt like a zombie.  Anyway, the next morning I was feeling human again.  This B&B has a fantastic owner, Steve, who has been taking me anywhere I wish to go.  We went to a Ladyboy show on Sunday night - and me a "good Catholic girl" - my mother would turn in her grave!!  Seriously though,  it was just good fun - mime and dance - a really enjoyable harmless evening, and going with a local made all the difference.  Last night I went for a roast dinner to a pub called The Fox - full of English expats - food very good - loads of fresh vegetables and met lots of Steve's friends.

Tonight, I am going to a hotel, where Steve plays the guitar and sings with another friend of his - they are the regular entertainment every Tuesday night - I will also eat there.  Tomorrow, he is taking 3 of us to Paradise Park, inland on the island - will let you know how that goes when I next update my blog.

At the expense of boring you, I will only tell you ONE TIME, that the beach at my second home was voted number 1 beach in the world - so if I give that 10/10  - I will grade the beaches along my way using that as a benchmark.  You will now understand my dilemma!  Ko Samui beach (5/10) is better than Hua Hin (3/10) - not so crowded - wider - still rough seas - OK if you are a good swimmer - I found a nice place to spend my reading time at one of the private resort hotels on the beach - just for the price of buying a coffee while there - I had a sun lounger, towel, bathroom facilities and good service.  Ko Samui has a nice feel to the place - friendly and easy to get around.

That's it for now - to be continued.........

8th Feb - had a great night at the Samui Resort Hotel where we had dinner and watched Steve and his friend play and sing - everything from Pink Floyd to Santana to Hank Marvin - it was a really good evening - got to bed about 12.30 am.

9th Feb - after breakfast Steve took 5 of us out on a day trip.  We visited WAT KHUNARAM Temple - this has a mummified monk in a glass cabinet Nam Tok Na Muang (highest point and centre of the island - fantastic view points along the way.  We went to Paradise park and The Magic Garden.  Paradise Park had lots of colourful birds, which we could feed.  There were deer, monkeys, parrots, rabbits etc - you could interact with all of them - got some great pictures.  We had lunch there and then used their infinity pool and loungers for about an hour or more.  We then headed off for the Magic Garden - all the sculpted stonework was done by one man over 44 years - it was a magical place - hardly anyone there as it is difficult to get to if you do not know your way around.  Both of these places were way up at the top of a mountain with great views of the coastline and the jungle all around us.  We got back at about 4.30 pm for a welcome dip in the pool here.

I must say that our host treated us royally and nothing was too much trouble for him - a perfect place to stay.  But all good things come to an end - now I am going to finish and do my packing.  I am being picked up at 6 am for the journey to Krabi.

I will upload my pics when I get there and type up the next segment of my travels.

Sounds like you are having the time of your life and we really are glad that it is going so well. Great that you should have such a nice guy as Steve to show you around. We are looking forward to seeing the photos when you get round to it but I am sure you must be really tired after all your travelling. I must say I didn't envy you the boat trips. Take care and keep us posted.
