One of the hardest things to do on a journey is to start it. After that, it's all downhill. But the first step is often the most difficult one. Especially if you're starting your journey from the office. There's always somebody who has something to tell you at the last minute. That can't wait. That can't be put on an email, and so, and so... Hurry up, man! It's freakin' cold out here!

André, my co-pilot for today, and I managed to move the plane outside. Helped by Simon, one of our finest mecanical engineers, and Carlos, a no less fine geophysicist (we call them beakers by the way, but don't tell them, they wouldn't understand). It's -13 (so, all the help is truely and gladly appreciated). That is enough to convince us it's now time for us to move on. So we do. With about 35 minutes delay, we take off from Ottawa. The weather isn't fabulous, but there's some very bad one moving in from the West. If we don't leave now, we're here for another three days minimum.

First stop is a little airport just on the other side of the US border. We have to clear customs. The custom officer doesn't look too happy about the 35 minutes wait in his car. He makes us pay it dearly. When you leave for a relatively very warm country, you don't fancy taking too many winter clothes. So didn't I. The hour we have to spend on the ground to get our situation clarified feels like eternity.
