After Vietnam, Laos is the quietest place on earth, or at least Savannakhet is! No hassle, no incessant calls of "motorbike" we we're not even hassled getting of the bus at the bus station, we feel really insignificant again. Going into shops without people jumping on you, in fact we had to look for the shopkeepers in most cases - phew. The landscape is really dry and this is just the beginning of the season, still we cannot complain after two days of solid rain in Hue.
There's nothing much to say about Savannakhet other than it's really quiet, probably it would develop more if it was on the main road and not a secondary one. Surprising really since it's the third largest population centre in Laos. There's a busy Wat where monks training consists at least in part of making new buddha statues for other Wats in the area. The mold is a huge bronze structure which gets bolted together and cement is poured in. Once this has set the buddha gets its hands positioned in one of the many poses, painted white, orange and then lacquered to a gold shine.
