Walking in the Ranges
Entry 29 of 75 | show all | print this entry |

We've finally found a place where we can go walking again and burn off some of those winter calories. Mumbray Creek, Flinders Ranges, more precisely Wilpena Pound and Dutchman Stern. The only thing to remember is that time estimates are so over the real time it takes to walk that you musn't be discouraged by 9 hours since it's probably only 5.
All the walks around here have masses of wallabies and kangaroos just lounging, eating or hopping around. Some of them are really curious as to why humans are there, so by flapping your arms around a bit you can get pretty close to them. Otherwise we've only seen emus and parrots or some sort of colourful birds, but some really nice scenery.
Flinders is quite a popular area for walking due to the land formation which is a great orange/yellow rock and once you're on top you can see green ranges snaking away into the distance like a lizard's curved back. We went up St Marys peak to 1171m which is quite vertical in places. Our hostel was invaded by a bunch of tourists from Melbourne and a guide from Adelaide, spent the evening out with this crew drinking and dancing in the local bar. We're beginning to suspect that "Good Times" involves smiling like a chicken in a cartoon and trying to flap your arms like a dodo, at least the Aussies do this after a few beers. More thumbnails ...

Veggie foods? (reply) Jul 9, 2007 04:51 EST by jon_helen
Hi guys, glad you're still having fun down under. Seems like you've found a great place to avoid the crowds in Quorn. What exactly was Dom doing up a tree? I'm intrigued - is the veggie food made of some kind of fungus, named after the same place?
We're back in Blighty now. After 2 weeks of incessant rain, it's finally sunny! Watched the Tour de France cycle through London yesterday,... show all
