The Ocean Road stretches from just outside Melbourne for about 350km west the seas powerful waves which shaped the limestone and sandstone cliffs and in fact are eating them up at about 2cm a year. It's well known for the 12 apostles, nowadays there are only 8 left since the others have been reclaimed by the sea, the last one collapsed in 2005 (so our presence had nothing to do with their dissappearance!).

Kenneth River - there are more koalas here than anywhere else we've been, it's ridiculous that we travelled 7000km before and only saw three - after only 200km from Melbourne we even saw our first one awake and eating.

Loch Ard Gorge has some fascinating inlets and a romatic history of only a cabin boy and a lady surviving a shipwreck. The boy swam out to save the lady, scaled, what must have been a sheer cliff and bought a rescue team to get her out. There was no indication if after his heroic efforts he married her or not.

Supposedly between June and September the Ocean Road ocean fills with whales for the winter time. However it seems we turned up too early and didn't see any - normally the first ones to arrive hit the news so everybody local knows when to go down to the coast (this avoids standing around uselessly in the cold). We did learn that for each movement that a whale makes a different name is given, so when it shows its flipper, tail or belly a particular name applies.
