Gravel Roads

The coromandel is a little peninsula to the east of Auckland which has some quiet beaches, mountain walks and cool hot springs. We spent a day walking up to the Pinnacles which although not the highest point in the area they are only 50m off it. The wind was incredibly strong but luckily we are not frail old ladies so didn't get blown off. With the strong wind though the cloud cover was moving rapidly and we were lucky to get any good photos in.
Driving is as always in NZ a sport, the gravel roads lead to a lot of sliding around corners as you navigate up and down the sides of mountains. Cathedral Cove is a quiet spot on the coast, only accessible at low tide (at least on foot), which offers a few nice beaches and a lot of limestone rock. In the same area we came across some hot springs which are right on the sea edge. It's really cool to dig your own hole in the sand and sit in it whilst it fills with hot water (up to 60 degrees), some people recommend for this reason channeling some sea water into the pool or take the risk of burning your bum.
