Land of Adventure

On our way south we stopped at lake tekapo for a small walk and checking out the scenery. There are a huge number of lakes in the central region, all full of beautiful clear water offerring up reflections when the light is right.
Queenstown is the heart of adventure here in NZ, the adventure mostly involves crazy "sports" like bungy, skydiving, other diving, climbing, later in the year skiing and we're sure they do some other nutty stuff. This is all due to there being no recourse to the law if you suffer an accident so there are low insurance costs for the companies treating you to the "thrill" of your life. We went walking through clouds in this rather ugly town which is overdeveloped in the way many places on the beach often are.
Wanaka, offers many similar activities and looks much prettier, has a micro-brewery and some good walking tracks. Tasted some beer from Wanaka Beer Works and bought 24 bottles to travel with, strangely we both preferred the Pilsner so the choice was simple. We went up Rob Roy track through forest, rocks and over a 20m swing bridge before finally having a great view of the glacier, especially when a huge portion just dropped of, the sound of the ice cracking was something like grinding machinery and it looks like a waterfall. The area was used for filming a lot of scenes in Lord of the Rings, although we suspect the tourist office of keeping quiet about it so that the commercial ventures can make money from trips. A couple of other towns of interest were Alexandra for cycling, Arrowtown for the autumn colours which are vibrant and rich. There's also a new wine region starting up here replacing all the apple orchards, apparently the braeburn apple was invented here and the kiwis are still creating more cross breads today.

Hello,
Ca me donne envie de vous p... show all

Hi,
Wow, really impressive pics. Nice Simon that you found a bike and a helmet. That must be an amazing place to get lost on a bike. Such beautiful landscapes, it really made LOTR the movie it was filming it in NZ. Take a picture of any hobbits if you see any.
take care,
Damon
