On the Road Sydney Brisbane

We gave in and rented a car since it's the only way to see this country other than the coast which is more than accessible by bus. The great thing about the car is that it comes with a tent and you can even sleep in the back with the seats down.
The downside is the age and the number of kilometres on the clock of the vehicle 1994 234000 Km. We've now discovered that all of the states have loads of free BBQ machines with picnic areas so that you don't have to go hungry - the price of meat is much lower than expected so you can normally afford steak :). Along the coast you can also get a free shower so no need to be smelly all the time. We immediately went up the coast to Newcastle where there are no geordies at least we didn't meet them, then went inland to see some national parks. New England was a creepy rainforest where we camped in the car (at 1500m it gets damn cold at night). Cathedral Rocks was our favourite park which offered some incredible views and Dom managed a little climbing with a huge chain attached to the rocks. Saw a little wildlife including some stupid looking bush turkeys, lace monitors (lizards with large claws) and of course the kangaroos, one of them with it's child that was so scared of Simon it climbed back in the pouch. Some towns along the New England route Tamworth, Armidale, Coffs Harbour then Ballina close to Byron Bay (renowned for being a hippy area but now more or less just backpackers and surfers). Brisbane didn't immediately appeal to us, the architecture is less interesting than Melbourne and the lifestyle not so good as Sydney. However we soon got used to it and there's a lot going for it, especially the sporting activities along the river with a 400m length of cliff wall 20m high which is open to climbers, water sports, some of which look really bizarre pump bike which if you get the rhythm wrong you sink. The Queensland museum is pretty good too, you can find all the animals you're likely to see and get some background on the aboriginals who were displaced rather like slaves from africa - how they lived and their language dialects.

Each state has its own road side service which aer all affiliated so no worries there. In fact we tried it out with Uwe on our car share trip when his carbureteur got blocked and they came in 20 minutes.
The Free just means that the BBQ is there, gas or electric you need to bring your own food. Or go to sydney and then you can get free food when you buy a beer.

original motor? (reply) Apr 2, 2007 03:48 EST by damonjon
hi dutes,
Do they have something like roadside service in case your car decides it's seen enough of australia? I guess you could just depo it somewhere and hike? It's not like you have to get back to work on monday, right? Very nice beach and lizard. A lace monitor. Hmmm, sounds like something out of Resident Evil. Free BBQ, you mean like you just show up and the food is already there... show all
