Melbourne to Sydney in Style

We met up a German guy Uwe for a car share up to Sydney along the east coast, his car was pretty cool as you'll see from the picture.
We tried another few people for car shares but a Belgium was so surprised that Dom was a girl we decided not too. Uwe drove us up in style through the national parks along the coast where we went walking every day, one national park blurs into another after awhile but at least the animals and plants change. Saw our first Wallaby (several afterwards), lots of birds, lizards, a strange porcupine like creature and spiders. Found hostels and camp sites along the way, it's important to remember that hotel means pub in most towns and they may or not have accommodation. First stop just before Lakes Entrance, then Croajingalong (pronounced crow-jing-along) just along the Victoria-New South Wales border, Eden the first town afterwards, Batemans Bay, Kiama who's only claim to fame is a big blow hole that sends water into the air but only when the atmospheric pressure is "right". Plenty of beaches along the coast to walk along, mix with crabs and shells, refreshed our feet in the sea which is pretty cold nothing like the Med or South China Seas which are nice and warm. At one point Simon discovered a lagoon with warm water for a dip but didn't like the curious fishes swimming on him. The locals in these tiny towns are "Australian", they drink alot, make a lot of noise and are fascinated by tourists, known as visitors (sounds like something from outer space or a bad french film). One old lady quite fancied Uwe but he wasn't interested since the age difference was too great and he didn't have music in his soul which she was after. Disco-ed one night in Batemans but everybody disappeared as attested to by photographic evidence by about 11pm. Drinking is mostly done as a take-out because the bars are prohibitively expensive or maybe it's because there are not many attractive women in the pubs. The rain finally caught up with us about 100km south of Sydney and it rained pretty hard overnight but it was still warm enough for shorts.
Could be a new entry but here's Sydney...
Since we've been in Sydney our first port of call has always been the liquor store (pretty much the same idea as in the US) so we're definitely fitting in with the aussies now. We're also making full use of all the hostel facilities by cooking our dinners but we miss our cupboard of spices :( The weather has been really hot and humid, the opera is classically touristic and Sydney is completely modeled on London with narrow winding streets people rushing around and with place names like Croydon, Lewisham, Vicotria st there's no mistaking it. Fortunately the city is smaller than London and you can "easily" walk to all the sites in a day (well perhaps we'd advise a fitness course before hand due to the steep slopes). Mardi Gras was Saturday the 3rd (an eventful day for Simon) it's mostly about standing for a political cause and being homosexual. The costumes were pretty fun and at least in some cases gave Rio a run for the money, after two hours of floats driving past we'd had enough and came back for food. It seems that Sydney proposes a lot of interesting stuff for backpackers, not least of which are free beers and food. Sunday is free roast dinner at the "Gaff" when you buy a beer, Monday at the hostel and in one of the local bars is free pizza - it's amazing the amount people eat when they cannot afford to buy beer anymore :) We managed to get hold of one or two slices at the hostel before nipping over to the bar for some more.
