Chiang Mai tourist capital of the north. Nowadays it's a bit too much Elephant treks, river rafting,
massage parlours and bars on every corner (date for the next pub crawl to be arranged). Still we got here on another refridgerated journey (by bus this time) and have managed to organise some trekking in the northern Muay Hong region, we unfortunately didn't find a non elephant, rafting trek until we'd already bought our tickets. Next time we'll know to look out for Poo eco trek which seems to be a much better deal. Departed on the trek in a small group of 7, although one of them was Thai visiting his homeland from France (Lille) - the others we happy to do 2 days with what they thought of as a great adventure so the elephants please some people. In fact the trekking is good, there are some narrow steep trails, rocks, branches, rivers, waterfalls etc..,
it's just that there is not much of it, the guide spends a great deal of time playing the guitar or sleeping! Every night during the winter a large fire is lit where everybody can gather round to keep warm, it's worth thinking about this and bringing something to cook (marshmellows) because the thais have not thought of this yet. The first village of Lahu tribes-people have trained their children to perform a small dance and sing for tourists, it's only once a week and I hope it pays for their schooling in town (3 hours walk away).

Keen as! (reply) Feb 5, 2007 18:42 EST by jon_helen
Heh Si and Dom, we're very impressed at the regularity of your postings! Puts our once every 2 to 4 weeks very much to shame! On the other hand, perhaps you're spending too much time in Internet cafés rather than bars?
Met an english couple called Si and Dot in Galapagos... very confusing - we couldn't help calling Dot, Dom!
Keep up the hard work...

no bike (reply) Feb 5, 2007 08:22 EST by damonjon
Hi sidom,
I guess a bike or a mule is out of the question. I don't think an elephant would be happy on those small trails. You two could always stay on as tour guides yourselves. Look forward to seeing the route for the pubcrawl. First directions would be: Take next flight out of Roissy to Thailand.
Market food photo: cockroaches??
