Confusion in Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat)

After a long train trip, one of those where you never know when it will end with the only entertainment was watching the food vendors circulate in the train calling out their wares as if in the market - we arrived in a hub town in the Isaan region of Thailand where making ones-self understood is not soo easy as the capital. It's true that the system of transliteration helps but then on half the signs and buses the name is not transliterated (seems like it was invented by the Americans!!)
The town has two names, if we understood right Khorat is the local name - the French probably understand this principal since there are two names for every airport in France. On a day trip to Phimai (1h30 by bus) to see the old Khmer temple ruins we managed to participate in a Hindu ceremony held by buddhists, very colourful and entertaining. The music was something like bagpipes whilst the dancing had more in common with Indian religious dancing. The locals tried to get into the spiritual side of things by attaching themselves with varying lengths of string to a pavillion, itself attached (by string) to all the religious artifacts in the Phimai ruins, a Gordian_Knot if ever we saw one. Couldn't make sense of the decoration though, and still have no idea if the pig heads were eaten since we didn't stay to watch.
We sampled some skewered sausages which appear to be a speciality in the region - not bad they had something like boudin blanc, won ton, frankfurters, fish cakes... Dom managed to find an indian guy making stuffed parathas (like pancakes stuffed with curried potatoes and other veg) which were not bad either.
