Oslo, the home of Doc - a delightful liquorice treat...
Rosalia - Mexican chick that loved Tom, the classic English gentleman, and accused me of being German. Anne - receptionism, and the apple of Tom's eye. Sitting around on hills, chatting the night away. Rolling down hills.
A few of the local sights. The Palace, Tom getting acquainted with his new mate, view from the Palace down the main street, and view from the Docks. Don't let the blue sky deceive you
And getting well acquainted with the train station due to a misreading of schedules. Namely, train we thought left at 7 am, actually left at 1 pm. Its too expensive to buy anything, so I'm just going to sit here and re-read a copy of the Guardian from a few days ago that my remaining Kroner has just about managed to afford. YES! Oh, and as it may in fact be the most expensive place in the history of time, Doc actually became our staple diet, along with possibly some Chewee bars and stolen free breakfast from the hostel shoved into my bag... good times!
And for a little summary: Oslo scores... 7/10. The sheer expense brings it down - not a backpacker destination. The calm and sophisticated atmosphere walking down the streets suggests it should be rated higher. The best things: Walking around the docks and harbour - some lovely views. Sitting on hill outside the hostel at night admiring our surroundings and the SVONE itself. The worst things: Buying a pre packaged tiny salad at lunch for a fiver! And then deciding I couldn't afford anything else to eat, ever, and starving. Also, the calmness could be mistaken for not much happening at times. Return Visit? When I'm older and richer, and more suited to such places, for sure.
And to begin the vast sweeping generalisations and sum up a whole country based on 2 days in one city (although there are apparently only 4 big cities in Norway): Experiences in Norway: 7.5/10. Oslo's 7 improved upon by a whole half point based on the beautiful scenery we saw on the train, and the cute little houses. Glad we went: On the 9 hour train journey back to Sweden - not really. Considering my bank balance - not really. Looking back at my pictures and memories - oh yes. Favourite bit: Looking over the city from the hills, with my bessie mates :) Next Time: The fjords, the villages, the trees. Looking forward to the countryside. And maybe bring a few packed lunches. :)
