The Aftermath of a Wine-Tasting Tour of SA!
Entry 75 of 85 | show all | print this entry |
Having been promised some great surf down the Fleurieu Peninsula of SA, we set off from Brighton in search of it. This search proved to be in vain, but we did find a rather pleasant beach in the form of Christies Beach, where we took a stroll up the seafront and out to the headland, during which we were overtaken by a superkeen bunch of power-walkers, out in force on this weekend morning. Yet again, a perfectly nice beach, under lovely weather, was practically deserted... it was unthinkable to us English folk!
After our refuelling and restocking of the food supplies stop, we deemed it late enough in the day (midday) to begin a wine-tasting tour of the McClaren Vale region, which began at the tourist information centre, which, like every other place in the region, boasted a cellar door, complete with a barman eager to top up everyone's glass at every opportunity. With me behind the wheel, Lucy took full advantage of this scenario at each place we stopped, while I found it amusing to laugh at the drunken middle-aged people, acting the fool in the middle of the day, and stuffed my face on the free food offered... everything from breadsticks to cheese, to olives. Mmm!
The best one we stopped at was probably Samuel's Gorge, which did come highly recommended to us, and rightly so. The bloke there was tres entertaining, and Lucy loved the wines there, and bought a Grenache. A couple more wineries later, we were at Oliver's and Lucy was sufficiently drunk to buy another bottle of Shiraz, which, the next day she claimed she didn't really want to buy but it seemed like a good idea at the time!
Haha! As soon as she got back in the van, she fell straight to sleep and it was up to me to drive us on to a suitable campsite... we picked Victor Harbour. It was a scenic drive, winding through the hills of SA at dusk, complete with more stunning trees...my favourite piece of scenery ;)
*107 km travelled* slackers!
We camped by a skate ramp, right on the beach, and tonight was the first night our poor little camper suffered the harsh plight of the Aussie winter weather. The wind shook it like mad, and the rain clattered down on the roof, waking us up at intermittant intervals. It was alright though - just pulled the sleeping bag over my head, and shut the world out, snuggling away.
