On the road down to Adelaide the scenery turned more and more similar to that of England, with all the lush green fields filled with sheep galore. It was a refreshing change to mindlessly ploughing down the highway, as was having radio to listen to.
It didn't take long to reach Adelaide - we were there by 1.30, and parked up in the free parking spots down by the Torrens river. We walked up the river, admiring the Adelaide Oval and the swans and pedaloes on the river, and even a bandstand - very English summertime, complete with bright, breezy weather and all. Then up past the railway station, the Old Parliament Building and the Casino, and into an exhibition of Aboriginal Artwork, which had some engaging stuff, all really bright and pure, but a bit out of my price range!
We wandered on, past the state library, a statue of King Edward VII, and colonial buildings that were again so quintessentially English, I practically felt like I was in Manchester or something. It seemed like a really young and vibrant city aswell, with a real Uni atmosphere.
We popped our heads in to the South Australia Museum for a nose about, and ended up staying for hours, captivated by the Aboriginal Culture and Pacific Islands exhibitions. I particularly liked the decorated and restored skulls from Papua New Guinea, they were freaky but cool in a twisted way. The air con in the building was freezing me though so I had to go outside and capture the last fledgling rays of the sun.
Town was still busy-busy as we walked up the main pedestrian shopping street, eyeing up the chocolate shops! We collected a few touristy brochures about the area, and returned to the van to find a suitable campsite and make plans for the following days in SA - time we never thought we'd have!
Preferring to camp by the beach, we drove out to Glenelg, 20 minutes from the city. Once there, we realized we'd highly underestimated how popular it was, especially on a Friday night - swarming with people, and a distinct lack of parking. Thus, we trucked a few k's down to the coast to Brighton beach, which still appeared to be quite upmarket itself, but more campervan friendly.
*502 km driven*
