Why hello, Malaysia...

So we were supposed to arrive in KL at 6 am, and then we were planning to check into a hostel for the next day, but the bus was somehow super speedy and unceremoniously dumped us at a "bus station", which was actually a layby off the side of a busy road, I'm sure, at 2.30 am. Much bemused and slightly befuddled we were approached by all manner of dodgy characters offering to take us to a variety of destinations on condition that we part with our life savings. Having changed no money into Malaysian and having nowhere to do at that hour we would have been completely buggered had a fellow not approached us offering free accomodation for the night if we payed for the night after. As this worked out at 1 pound a night each, it sounded fabulous. Although the room may actually be a shoebox, there is a bed, and no rats (yet) as in Koh Tao, so therefore awesome!
So we slept, and awoke later that morning, as yet unaware we had passed into a new time zone! Our hostel is in Chinatown, which we wandered through and booked a 3 day, 2 night trek into Taman Negara national park, leaving tomorrow, followed by our transport to Mersing and then to Pulau Tioman - an island on the south east coast on which we plan to do more diving. Then we were submerged in markets of all kinds, mystified by the food on offer, and the cheapness of everything else. After a while we went back to the hostel, finally paid and then got the subway to KL Tower - the 4th tallest communication tower in the world.
There were great views all over the city and you could easily see the Batu Caves 50 km north and of course the Petronas Towers, the universal symbol of KL.
We had to trek through the city jungle to get up to the tower, which encompassed a strange outdoor gym of sorts, featuring all kinds of random exercises that we found amusing.

After this it was straight to the Central Market for more shopping - KL is just as cheap as Bangkok, which is tres cheap after having experienced island prices for the last 2 weeks. I bought two awesome little wooden masks and a batik to hang, and a present for little mum (which is a surprise!) and a present for Joey which I subsequently ate (sorry!). Now getting ready and packing for the jungle baby!
Where I stayed:
Wheelers Guesthouse
