The Joys of the Thai Transport System
Entry 12 of 85 | show all | print this entry |
We were completely dreading this trip, haunted by memories of the nauseating boat ride over, and thus chose to take the shorter boat trip back to Chumphon, as opposed to Surat Thani, and then the longer bus ride. This decision may have been somewhat regrettable, given that we slept the entire way through the boat trip like babies, and were then subjected to all manner of random stoppages and hold-ups on the bus trip, including several change overs and long waits. Ultimately it became a day of transit, dotted with spots of sleep, themselves ruined by nightmares created by the number of written off and unrecovered vehicles on the Thai roadsides. Our drivers remained completely unperturbed by this, continuing to speed, and fuel themselves with Thai Red Bull (a lethal mixture of speed and caffeine), whilst we clung on for a dear life, vaguely attempting to construct seatbelts with our bags. In the end, it was a case of close your eyes and cross your fingers, which I suppose did the trick when we eventually arrived in Krabi..
