Touchdown Bangkok approx 4pm local time! We befriended a girl on the flight called CP and she came back to the Asia Hotel with us and got a room for the night. Hotel was amazing - massive chandeliers in the hall as big as the beds almost! We caught a river taxi into town - described by the guidebook as "the cheapest form of transport, if you can stand the stench of the river" haha, it was indeed awful - my scarf is a life saver. It was about 8 baht - 10p maybe.
Anyway, once in town we wandered around like little nomads past various temples, lit up at night, a MASSIVE flower market, and a democracy rally in the square by the grand palace - full of loads of people wearing yellow tshirts and waving flags and shouting dictator! Dictator! At the king - they were trying to plan a coup or something I think! Apparently it will go on every night until they get rid of him! I can 't believe he's 80 - he has all these pics of himself in monuments around town looking really young, haha. Anyway, we ended up in Khao San Rd, the backpacker street and grabbed some food at a bar where there was a Thai guy on an acoustic guitar singing songs like Pretty Woman and Brown Eyed Girl haha, which was completely surreal. We went to get a tuk-tuk home and I bartered the guy down from 300 Baht to 30, so unsurprisingly, he didn't take us to our hotel, but to a "Ping Pong" show - details of which I can't repeat... I'm sure there may be young children reading! When we refused to get out or pay him he unceremoniously dumped us by the side of the street to get a taxi home while we were laughing our heads off!
We obviously didn't learn our lesson about the tuk-tuks as the next day we got on one and were ferried round to various Wats and Standing Buddhas for 20 Baht, as long as went in Thai tailoring shops and jewellery stores, in the vain hope that we would buy something and get him free gasoline vouchers! Come on mate, as if I'm going to buy a suit and surgically remove myself from every seat in Thailand wearing it! They must have known we weren't interested yet pestered us insanely anyway!
In the one good place he took us to, we booked our day trip to the River Kwai and Tiger Temple, and our trekking tour in Chiang Mai so I guess we can thank him for that! A couple of the sights he took us to included the Marble Temple, complete with a set of monks.
And to the Golden Mountain, complete with a waterfall, and views out over Bangkok if you climbed up to the top.
Oh, and one more thing - the breakfast is so weird - its like normal English breakfast items, such as bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast and cereal, interspersed with exotic fruits, noodles, rice, cabbage, tofu, and a weird black soup with pork in it! The randomness was actually rather good although I have a feeling I may get sick of noodles and rice soon...? Getting good at the old chop sticks though!

Bangkok sounds weird (reply) Jun 22, 2007 11:26 EST by lizallen
Sounds as though you have had several unusual experiences already. Your journeys in Bangkok raised a smile. We had similar difficulties persuading the locals we didn't want to buy all sorts of stuff in Egypt.
