An entry from Cath

This is just a quick note from me about my birthday Gibbon Experience. As many of you know Simon suggested a few weeks before we left that we do the Gibbon Experience while in laos...oh ok Si what does it involve....well....7 hours of trekking through the Bokeo forrest through rivers, spiders and leeches to get there, then you live in a tree 150m from the ground, and you travel to other tree huts by flying fox, some of these up to 1km long. While this sounded exciting in some ways, I was a bit concerned about the whole ordeal...naturally. But Si insisted that we were doing it and that i was just going to have to get used to 'this kind of thing'. So during our travels in Thailand we went about organising the trip (2 nights 3 days) but we werent sure what date we would be crossing into Laos so the date for the trip was still up in the air. As time went by it became apparent that date we would start the trek would be my birthday, and fingers crossed I was hoping for an extra leech or two for my special day ;-).
For all those who knew my reservations about the Gibbon Experience I just had to write this entry myself.......it was the most amazing experience of my life and I am so glad that Si insisted that we do it. My birthday evening was spent in our treehouse with our new housemates Tom and Neil, gazing out over the Bokeo forest as the sun went down and the mist rolled in over the tree tops until we ourselves were engulfed in the mist. When darkness fell we sat around pondering the beauty of this with just once candle to light the tree hut. Sometimes we talked, and sometimes we all just gazed out enjoyed the peacefulness and listened to the sounds of the forest. The zip lines (flying foxes) were also amazing, it was as if you were really flying and rather that being a 'boys toy' it was actually very breathtaking and beautiful as you zipped over the forest valley. So it was the best birthday present ever and one I will never forget. And yes there was leeches (I managed to get one on my foot which I was a bit proud of- my first leech!) and spiders and rats and mud and we were so dirty by the end of it we were hardly recognisable but it was brilliant.
I'm sure Si will write an entry with all the details so that's all from me for now! Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes :-)
Love Cath
