Our next stop - a flying visit to Gori, Stalin's birthplace, en-route to the mountains.
Gori is home to the largest statue of Stalin remaining anywhere in the world - the town appears to remain quite fond of him and so it's natural that they also have a Stalin museum.
The museum was, how shall we put this, less than balanced. The guide who led us round was clearly a fan and took great delight in sharing his many achievements. It does have a large collection of photos from throughout the era - can't be many places in the world with such a comprehensive collection of Soviet propaganda material any more! I was quite surprised to discover that as a young man, he looked surprisingly like Keano Reeves with a 'tashe.
They also have the railway carriage that Stalin did much of his travelling about in (he disliked flying) - it was quite opulent - his carriage had an en suite bathroom complete with bath and chandelier - and possibly not the luxury the rest of his compatriots at the time enjoyed! The museum is just behind the house Uncle Joe was born in - we know this because it's still there - weirdly encased in a many-columned rather grand structure built in the 1930s.
Bizarre, but probably worth a visit if you're ever in town...
