Spending three nights in the town of Goreme in the Cappadocia region of Turkey exploring the amazing cave cities. The whole region was shaped by 3 enormous volcanoes which erupted millions of years ago spilling lava everywhere. The locals then carved out these caves over hundreds of years. Cave windows

Apparently up to 50,000 people could be housed underground in times of danger and the 11th and 12th century frescos left in the Hittite churches are incredibly vivid still.

As ever we've enjoyed the local hospitality and Jim is suffering from his first real hangover of the trip - still nothing a bit of retail therapy in a carpet shop couldn't solve! As you'll see we did restrain ourselves and only succumbed to one of them. Looks as if we'll have an amazing collection of foreign nicknacks, but no house to put them in.

We were treated to a cultural evening of belly dancing and whirling dervish performances last night - the whole experience kinda accounts for Jim's hangover - well that and the hubbly-bubbly pipe and dodgy whisky he insisted on consuming when we got back to the truck...

Hot air ballooning

On our final day in Goreme we got up at 4:45 to take a hot air balloon trip over the area - which was fantastic! We got some great photos and just really enjoyed the experience. By the way we learnt on landing that Balloon view

Turkish "champagne" is no where near as nice as their beer or their wine - trust me it's best avoided! The other very bizarre aspect of the whole trip was that the balloon was made in Oswestry (the town in Shropshire I was born in!) and our Turkish army pilot had recently spent a month there. What a small world.
