Zhongdian or Shangri-la is a whole new feel. A much smaller Old Town than any of the others I had visited to date, it is evident that I was close to the Tibetan border. The Tibetan features are more similar to some Latin American tribes or have even been compared to the Apache Indians. The women wear a fuchsia colored head wrap while the men wear a cowboy style hat. There is certainly a more somber tone in the air and the shops all sell cold weather gear and oxygen in a can.

I took a bed in the dorms at N'Kitchen Hostel and spent the next day bike riding with another hostel guest from Denmark. We powered for a good few hours through the grasslands and local villages around the Napa Lake. The fields went on for miles dominated by the loads of Yaks grazing.

Tonight I met up with a Ricky, a Chilean I met on CS. He is a truly happy man, enthusiastic about helping the local Chinese and Tibetan villagers and was most hospitable to me as well. We went to his favorite Nepalese restaurant and enjoyed a decent bottle of Chilean wine. After I joined in on some local dancing and took in the fresh air at the high altitudes of 9,850ft.

Actually I don’t know if it was the wine or the altitude adjustment but all the next day I suffered from a terrible migraine and lack of appetite.

Moving on!
