Today Mark came solo to pick me up and together we drove the winding road east passing beautiful rice paddies, a cute resort town called Candidasa and finally arriving to Maharati Resort in Talumben by noon. Mark made sure I finished my exams before we got in the water. Our first dive today was as simple as walking in from shore. Thank God we were wearing booties, this was one seriously rocky walk, not to mention fighting the hard crashing waves with an extra 30 lbs. on my back. But once we were in and deep it was all worth it. From the start we saw a ton of fish. The underworld is exactly that, a world of sea life filled with everything from little nemos to sharks, manta rays, scorpion fish, and limitless variety of coral and sponge.

After ? hours and more reading and quizzes, we returned to the water. This time we walked the half mile to the wreck starting point. Fortunately there are porters to help carry the load, unfortunately, they are often very tiny women who stack triple their weight on their head. We entered the water, again dodging the ferocious waves and balancing on the rocks until able to float. I was very excited about my first wreck dive. We started at the starboard which is the shallowest point, slowing maneuvering down to the bowe  of the boat. You can easily identify the shell but because the boat sat abandoned on shore for nearly 50 years, it is pretty stripped of much else. Nonetheless, it makes a perfect shelter for the fish and interesting caves to duct down into and around.

After xiel minutes at bottom, we surfaced, showered and met again to discuss night diving. During the break I met this really lovely Australian couple, Rose and Mike. They are dive addicts who have been diving for 30 years who we invited to join us but in the end they opted not to. The next day when we were departing they actually extended an invitation for me to meet up with them in Sydney in December for world class diving at South West Rocks.

In the meantime, Mark and I entered back into the water for my third dive of the day. I wasn't sure how I would do with the night diving but it was fine. Well, it wasn’t quite as rewarding as I had hoped, I didn’t get a sense that we were seeing such a different array of fish but it was an interesting sensation and I learned that it is really important to have a strong torch.

We surfaced around 8:30PM for a delicious chicken curry dinner before getting to bed by 10:00PM and enjoying a solid night rest. Of course just to do it all over again the next morning.
