Still under the weather, I grabbed a bite at a stall in the Mercat de Barcelona on the Ramblas and then just worked my way uptown on Gran Via, the equivalent of 5th Avenue or Rodeo Drive. Here lives the Gaudi houses: Casa Batlló and Pedrera.
More fascinating though were all of the FCB fans dressed in their favorite team shirts. Tonight was the huge championship between Barcelona and Manchester. It was impossible to get into the English pubs but those were no interest to me anyway. I was for sure rooting for Barcelona, as if I care about European football in the slightest, but as it turned out I was on the side of the stronger team. Normally the city gathers at Plaza Catalunya where they set up a huge live broadcast for all to watch. But due to the recent protest from youth opposed to the fact that the government is ignoring the 21% unemployment rate, the city set up for the broadcast at Arc du Trompf instead. Wise choice as I see it, since there were some 20,000 spectators gathered here tonight, all cheering and reacting with every kick. It was magnificent to be immersed in the crowd and to witness the energy first hand. Check out the video for a taste of what I am referring to. I was smart enough though to exit after goal 3 with 15 minutes left in the game. I already missed getting hit with a fire bomb and had no desire to be trampled. Congrats to FCB, you earned the cup.
