Before heading to Pamukkale, I was determined to fit in a visit to the cruise ship port of Kusadasi. Regina and I actually accompanied one another, did a whirl around the touristy bazar, checked out Pigeon Island and Ladies Beach and was ready to head back to our quaint town of Selcuk.

I had lined up a couch with Arif for two nights thinking he was living in Pamukkale, but as it turns out he lives in the adjoining metropolitan city of Denizli. 'Til I figured out the two mini-buses aka Dolmus packed in like sardines, a local girl who spoke English came to my rescue. Now is a good time to explain the concept of the Dolmus. Basically they are these van/mini buses that operate like a shared taxi. They cost about $1USD and people just jump on and off to get to their destination. It's like a fun version of musical chairs, as one person jumps off, another sits and payment comes on the honor system usually passing three people's hands til the driver sorts the change and passes it back. Needless to say, what should take 15 minutes to arrive to a destination, will no doubt take 45 minutes. It’s a good way to see the city but isn’t conducive to being on any schedule.

I arrived to Calmik where Arif lives with his brother. It is clearly a wealthy neighborhood seen by the huge shopping mall and the trendy cafes that line his street. We dropped off my things and went for a nice stroll up the block toward the "forest" as he called it. It is more like a medium size park with a running path that measures 1.5km and lots of children’s playgrounds and picnic areas.
