We arrived at 10:00AM for a flight at noon. We purposely spent every last Durham we had in our possession by the time we arrived inside the gate, post customs mind you. So here we sit in this tiny airport with another 400 people when we find out that there were technical difficulties with the plane and it would be a two hour delay. The two hour delay turned out to be a six hour delay
Earlier in the café, I was so desperate to buy water, that I approached this Frenchman. I borrowed a total of $.30USD and we had a lovely conversation. His English was good, so along with six kids in tow (they were a few families traveling together), he inquired about by my attempt to travel the world for a year. It gave the kids a chance to listen to English as well.
The next eight hours were grueling. Since it was a low cost airline, it was Southwest style; first come, first served. Straight out of a movie we sat in this one large room anxious to fight the crowds to get in line at the correct gate, every time an incomprehensible announcement would could over the speakers. But the icing on the cake was the intolerable screeching coming from a two year old girl who managed to dominate the waiting area.
Finally at around 3:30PM the airlines provided a free sandwich, basically a slice of cheese between a roll, and one drink per person; astonishing for Ryan Air, the ones who will screw you every chance they can. It did tie us over though, since credit cards were only accepted at the Duty Free shop where the minimum purchase was 10Euros worth of chocolate.
The down time, gave me a chance to organize some images and for Lowell to complete his third book in 10 days. Unfortunately between the malnutrition and the air conditioning, I arrived to Barcelona with a sore throat.
