On our way from the brunch spot to the museum of contemporary art, we stopped to pay homage to the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse. The memorial includes a very small but perfectly preserved (and unnaturally graffiti-free) stretch of Wall. This may be the only place left where you can see the orginal layers of defenses, which actually included two walls with a "death strip" in the middle, where those attempting to cross would be shot on sight. There is also a documentation center, which contains the stories (in many cases photos and actual Stasi files) of persons attempting to escape East Berlin.

We also visited the nearby Chapel of Reconciliation, which you can read more about here.
