We began the day with a bus tour around Hamburg. Our tour guide was a very pretentious woman who, in her best affected British accent, tried to impress upon us the various places in Hamburg (such as Harvestehude and Blankenesee) where one lives, "if one has the money." Apparently Hamburg is home to more millionaires than any other city in Germany. Afterward, we had a fascinating tour of the DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) research laboratory, which has three particle accelerators, the largest of which runs underground through a large sector of the city. In the afternoon, we took a boat trip around the port, which was less interesting than one might expect. I will post a video of a portion of the tour. What one mainly sees is other, bigger boats. I was very pleased with our hotel in Hamburg--a Mercure near the television tower--and highly recommend it.
