*1965 in Brazaville (CG), lives in Brazaville (CG)
Bill Kouélany is author, playwright and painter. Her paintings, installations, videos, photographs and calligraphies deal with current issues and potential violence of humans. The visual language she develops results from a very personal confrontation with the consequences of war in her home country and the precarious situations world-wide.

Bill Kouélany condensed her expressionist work complex on local modernity in the Republic of Congo into an extensive installation: The stylized reconstruction of a wall serves as a display for her works and as a metaphor for the walls in politics and the military. Quotations collected from international newspaper articles about political conflicts and violence are mounted on two-dimensional papier-mâché bricks - the paper bricks are embroidered with abstract line drawings implying privacy. These private representations are complemented by two video works, Chair Monologue - Autoportrait and Résistance (2006-2007), which find metaphoric pictures for how architecture affects our identities.
