First News from Mumbai

Well finally we're here - and finally I've had time to write some news. Our first impressions are too much to write in such a short time but here's a few quick thoughts. Noisy - there is a constant orchestra of tooting horns, reving engines, bustling people, and sellers of all sorts of things. The crowds are immense. There are literally people everywhere. People on the roads, people under bridges, people in cars, people in buses, people hanging out of buses, people jumping on and off buses while the buses are moving!! We are a novelity - being some of the few white people (mot of us anyway) that some are used to seeing. I've even been asked to have a picture taken with me!! Not sure if it was my colour or my size - but it was fun anyway :> Our intial drive from the airport to our hotel was quite shocking as we struggled to take it all in after the clean and organised 24 hours we'd spent in Kuala Lumpur, but now that we've been here a few days we've all managed to slip in the groove of Mumbai life. We've got used to catching auto rickshaws, crossing the road - seriously a mission which requires courage and faith - and bargaining for things at shops. Work on the project in the slums started today, as well as work at the church building where we are painting the inside of the hall used for services. Impressions of the slum project will be on my next entry - probably by one of the other team members who are spending more time there. Keep praying for us.
