On our way back from Saudi Arabia we had a 6 hour stopover in Egypt. As soon as we arrived we went straight to a flight desk to see if we could leave the airport and maybe get to the pyramids and back. They checked our tickets and although we had economy seating the Saudi Sheik's tickets were so high-class that they arranged an airline bus for us and drove us there personally. Two of us, myself included, managed to rebook our flights and decided to brave a few sweltering days in the heart of Cairo before returning home.
It was so early in the morning that the pyramids weren't open yet (they open at 8am...does that sound ridiculous or what!?) so we were shuttled to someone's brother's uncle's perfume shop for a sniff of the local produce. Imagine, 10 sweaty guys fresh out of Saudi Arabia who usually have no interest in the smell of their own their bodies whatsoever sitting at 7am in the morning in some Egyptian guys early morning perfume shop near the pyramids. The perfume seller was so good, so adept at his art, that all but one of us spent at least €40 in his shop on various scents designed to invigorate, intoxicate and arouse in some way or another.
After this stint of wanton smelling we were ready for the pyramids.
