From Bundaberg we caught the bus to Agnes Water and 1770. 1770 is so named because of Lieutenant James Cook's voyage up the east coast of Australia in 1770. It was here that Cook made his second landing on Australian soil. At first glance it seemed like there was nothing to do here but we soon managed to occupy ourselves for the 3 days that we were here.
We were staying at Cool Bananas which is one of the nicest hostels we have stayed at. The hostel is actually in Agnes Water, which is about 6km from 1770. So on Wednesday we took what we thought was a shuttle bus to 1770. However, it turned out to be a free tour of the area as there is no public transport in the area. The tour was run by Agnes-1770 Car Hire company, based across the road from the hostel. The tour was pretty good - they took us on 4WD tracks to one of the beaches and then up to 1770 to have a look around. It's a good thing we took the tour and didn't walk as there is nothing much there in 1770, only a couple of shops and a pub
Anyway after the tour we had a lazy afternoon before getting a lift back up to 1770 to do a LARC tour. We decided to only do the sunset tour as the full day seemed a bit too expensive. So we hopped onto the big pink vessel for an information and fun packed hour or so, and also a beautiful sunset, as well as a bit of a splash.
Thursday's weather turned out to be perfect for the beach so that's where we headed for a couple of hours. The water wasn't too cold either. In the afternoon we headed back to the Agnes-1770 Company to take part in their Scooter-Roo tours. The weather was perfect and we had the best time on these little scooters, just zipping around the hills etc. One word of warning though, if you are new to scooters, just stay at the back. In our group we had a bunch of Irish lads behaving like idiots and one of them caused a crash that had him and another girl needing a doctor. Nothing serious but totally avoidable.
After our scooter experience we were going to hire them out again for the next day but our guide persuaded us to hire a 4WD and go to the National Parks instead. So on Friday we set out for Deepwater National Park and a bit of offroading. It was better than Fraser Island as there were only the two of us and no eskies to get broken. So we both had a go at driving in the sand and I have to say it was a lot of fun, (although the scooter was better!). We drove all the way down to Rules Beach, had a spot of lunch and then drove back up to Agnes Water and Eurimbula National Park. Inside the park we went to the Ganoonga Noonga Lookout for panoramic views of the sand dunes and the park. After that we went back to 1770 to look at the commemorative cairn marking Captain Cook's landing in 1770.
