A little stop in Rainbow Beach

From Noosa we were going to go straight to Hervey Bay but we decided to have a couple of days stop in Rainbow Beach on the way. Rainbow Beach is even smaller than Noosa, just one street of shops. We didn't realise until we got there but the hostel organises all the Fraser Island trips that are booked through Peter Pan Travel. So most people only stay for one night before their trip and one night after they get back.
Rainbow Beach was originally known as Back Beach and was home to a large sand mining industry until 1976. The current name comes from the rainbow coloured cliffs. In an Aboriginal legend the cliffs were coloured when Yiningie (the spirit of the Gods representing Rainbow) was killed in a fight, spreading his 'colourful' spirits across the cliffs.
We finally managed to do the Dolphin Sea Kayaking that we had been trying to do since Byron Bay. This was really good fun and we saw approximately 15 dolphins, swimming right next to our kayaks. It was hard work paddling though but on the way back in we had some fun surfing in the waves. The kayaks are very stable apart from when surfing, and this is when most of the kayaks flipped over. We were lucky and our boat didn't flip over but one of the waves knocked me out of the boat. In the evening there is nothing to do apart from either sit in the hostel bar or go to the one and only pub. The hostel does cheap meals at $4 every evening, so after we ate, we went to check out the local pub to watch the footy. The pub also has free pool from Sun - Thurs so that kept us entertained. Still haven't managed to win yet though I am getting closer.
As Rainbow Beach is so quiet, and there aren't many streetlights it is the perfect place to look at the stars. We managed to see the Southern Cross and also the Milky Way! Monday we were all stiff and aching from kayaking so we spent the morning painting our boomerangs. You can buy and paint your own digeridoo as well but since we had already bought one we decided just to do the boomerangs instead. It's very therapeutic but takes a lot longer than you'd think - at least 4 or 5 hours. We spent the evening in the pub again playing pool, and watching sport on the tv, before coming back to pack up our stuff. More thumbnails ...
