Rottnest Island

Took a day trip to Rottnest Island today. Rottnest Island is a little island just off the west coast of Australia. You can get there by taking a ferry from Perth, that goes down the Swan River and then to Rottnest. Or you can do what we did, catch the train to Fremantle and then catch the ferry to Rottnest.
There are no cars on Rottnest, so you can either hire bikes as we did or walk round the island. Going round the whole island will take about 3 hrs by bike. We didn't have that much time so we went round half of the island. Be warned, the island is very hilly! Rottnest is also the only place that has Quokkas. These are small marsupials, not unlike wombats. They are quite used to humans so we got very close to them and even managed to stroke one of them.
The crossing over was quite rough on the way there - it only takes 25mins from Fremantle but if you get seasick, I'd definitely recommend taking some tablets beforehand. Thankfully we both survived the crossing. Coming back was nice and calm! Tomorrow we are going to Darwin and so this is the end of our Western Australia adventure! More thumbnails ...
