On the weekend we went to visit a couple, Sarah & Gareth who have just had a little baby girl called Rebecca. We met Sarah & Gareth through the CIMA Chrsitmas party last year, and have had a couple of nights out since then.
This time we went over to their house in Ngaio to visit the new addition to the family, born on 31st Aug.
The other exciting thing that happened on the weekend was that Wellington Lions won the Ranfurly Shield. This is an old competition dating back to 1904, where the holders defend the shield during the regular season home games. If they lose at home, then the shield goes to the match winners.
So Wellington beat Auckland to win the shield. The following week they would have to defend it against Tasman, but before then, Wellington council organised a parade of the shield starting from Parliament, along Lambton Quay to the Civic Centre. This was during lunchtime on Tuesday so I went out with Anna, a work colleague and met up with Graham to watch the parade.
It was quite refreshing to see that a lot of the general public turned out as well. The organisers were handing out large inflatable paws so we grabbed a couple of those, and watched the parade go by. There were a number of floats going past and the players were all on one, with the Ranfurly Shield. One player Piri Weepu did a lovely thing and jumped down onto the road with the shield and brought it to the crowd for us to touch. I think it was mainly for the group of kids next to us, but we had a little touch as well! Well you've got to get into the spirit of things don't you!
