We left the hotel at 8.30am after a continental breakfast and headed down towards Auckland. On the way we stopped at Kawakawa, which is less than 30 mins from Paihia, to visit the Huntertwasser toilets. Friedrich Huntertwasser lived in Kawakawa from 1975 until he died in 2000. Amongst other things he was a painter and architect, and he created the toilets in 1997. The interior is made from broken tiles, coloured bottles and other random objects. The toilets are actually public toilets in full working order. We were advised by the hotel owners not to bother visiting these toilets but I thought they were interesting and worth a stop, especially as they are on the way back down to Auckland.
Our 2nd stop was at Whangarei. We weren't going to stop there, but whilst driving down SH1 we saw a sign to Whangarei Falls, so we decided to have a little detour. We got a bit lost on the way to the waterfalls but managed to get there in the end. We didn't have enough time, but there was a nice picnic area at the bottom of the falls which looked like it would be a nice place to stop and have some lunch. Maybe next time!
We then continued back down to Auckland, and after a quick stop at the outlet store, we headed back to the airport to drop the hire car off, and caught the courtesy bus to the airport. This time our flight was on time and soon our long weekend was over and we were back in Wellington.
Unfortunately we don't have any more public holidays until October so no more long weekends away but I'm sure we'll still fit in a few trips here and there!
