Today we did the Wellington Round the Bays 'fun' run. It's 7km, starts in the city centre, and as the name suggests, the course goes round some bays until Kilbirnie. It's a flat and scenic race, thank goodness as Wellington is very hilly in places.
We weren't sure that we'd be able to run it all, since the last run I did was the 5km Race for Life in 2006, and Graham hasn't ever done a race as such, although he does sometimes jog to work! I'm pleased to say that we did both manage it, even if we didn't manage to stay together. My plodding pace is a bit too slow for Graham, but I got there in the end.
It's a very family oriented day, as most things seem to be in Wellington. There were two sections - the runners, who started at 9.20am, and then the walkers who started 10 mins later. There were people with child buggies, pushing their kids along. Some of these were in the runners section and put us to shame as they went flying past. I even saw one guy with his dog running along.
We were in bright green t-shirts, courtesy of Telecom, the company Graham works for. They didn't pay for our entry, but if you entered your entry number on their website you got a free t-shirt and entry to the Telecom tent at the end. This was well worth it, as at the finish there was a big marquee and seating area, with free food and drinks. They also had a massage table, and I managed to win a free massage, which my legs were very grateful for.
They also had some entertainment and spot prizes at the finish, and during the race you have to wear a transponder on your shoelace to time accurately when you cross the start and then when you cross the finish. Our times will be printed in the paper tomorrow, but our rough guess is approx 40 mins. Hopefully our legs muscles will have stopped aching by then!
