This weekend has been the New Zealand International Rugby Sevens tournament, held at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. The tickets went on sale in October and were sold out in 5 minutes. We didn't manage to get tickets, but we did watch parts of it on TV.
The tournament is held over 2 days, Friday and Saturday, and everyone who goes, gets dressed up in fancy dress. On the Saturday night, Wellington council hosts a big party at Courtenay Place. The streets are closed off, and there is a band playing and a big screen to watch the final on. This year, New Zealand won, but it was a close game between them and Samoa.
We went down to Courtenay Place around 7.30pm, and it was fairly quiet in the bars. We met one of my work colleagues, Tony, and his niece Kate, and then a bit later, a couple of his friends.
By the time the final was on at 9pm the bars were getting pretty busy, and there were all sorts of weird and wonderful costumes on display. We stayed in the bar mainly, but there was a band playing outside which seemed to be pretty popular. All in all, a fun night!
