In a typical fashion, we woke up on Christmas Day to the sound of rain hitting the window. It had been nice all week leading up to Christmas but unfortunately the day itself was a washout. Good thing we didn't plan a barbeque!
Thanks to the marvellous technology that is Skype, we spoke to my parents in the morning (UK Xmas eve) and then in the evening we watched Graham's family opening their presents on UK Xmas Day morning!
Our own Christmas Day was quiet and relaxing. We managed to time the food to all be ready more or less together so that we could sit down for a meal. We weren't quite adventurous or hungry enough to do turkey and all the trimmings, so we opted for a smoked ham with some potatoes and veg. We had bruschetta for starters, which Graham made, then ended up with Christmas pudding. We did learn a couple of things - ham is better cooked with the skin and foil on, removed afterwards, and remember to time how long the pudding has been steaming for, not just guess as we did!
We were happy to know that NZ TV has just as many films on as the UK. In the morning we watched Muppets Christmas Carol, followed by Shrek 3 (one of my presents - thanks Leanne!) after lunch and later in the evening, we watched a Nicolas Cage movie, National Treasure. I even managed to fit in a bit more skyping, to my friend Colin. Webcams and broadband are the way forward!
It was a relatively early end to Christmas Day as we were setting off fairly early the next day on our little adventure. For those who don't already know, I'd planned our holiday as a surprise for Graham, so he didn't know what was in store for the next few days!
