On Sunday morning, we drove to Cape Palliser. Cape Palliser is the southernmost point of the North Island. There are only really 2 things to do here, climb the 250 steps to visit the century old lighthouse, and also visit the fur seal colony that lives at the cape. We did both, but the steps are hard work on the legs! Well worth the view at the top though. We also saw some seals. There didn't seem to be very many about, but it was a gorgeous day so maybe they were off swimming in the sea! Apparently, August is a good time to go as then there are baby seals about.
We left Cape Palliser and went to the Putangirua Pinnacles, which were on the way back, not far from the Cape. The pinnacles lie in the Aorangi Forest Park, and there are a few different walks to reach them. We took what we thought was the easiest route, along the streambed path. However, it was actually really hard work, possibly because we didn't have boots on, only trainers, and possibly because it was really really hot! Next time, we'll do the bush walk that ends up at the top looking down on the pinnacles!
After the pinnacles, we drove back to Wellington, via a stop for lunch in Martinborough, a little town in the Wairarapa.
